Market Trend: Chips, Cells and Your Next Connection. Do You Know Sacramento’s Biotech and Tech Players?
Across Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado and Yolo counties, technology companies and research centers are giving the capital region a broader economic identity. Within roughly 35 miles of Sacramento, you’ll find parts of four counties: Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado and Yolo. Do you know the power players surrounding our “little” metropolitan city? From tech giants to biotech innovators and research institutions, this region has an impressive lineup making big moves. If networking is your game, know the players, study the board and make your next move count.**CAPBIO Summit 2026**Last month, I had the pleasure of being a guest at the first ever, Sacramento **CAPBIO Summit**. It brought so much light to what is taking place in the BIOTECH world here in Sacramento and the surrounding counties. We are in an emerging **translational, workforce‑forward, biotech hub** which is linked to one of the greatest universities in the world…UC Davis.Sacramento is very desirable for the tech and biotech companies, and they are choosing the Sacramento Region for:
  • The researchers
  • Startup growth
  • Industry partnerships
  • Policy proximity
  • Inclusive talent pipelines
  • Lower real estate costs
  • Lower cost of living in comparison to the 3 other California Metro cities (San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego)
While attending the summit, several biotech founders, scientists and researchers asked me, ***“What is a real estate agent doing at a biotech event?”*** My answer: understanding the businesses shaping our region helps me better serve the people who live and work here. Two factors especially caught my attention: lower real estate costs and a lower cost of living compared with San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego. That relative affordability could help attract companies seeking room to grow and employees looking for a place to call home. For years, Sacramento’s economic story has centered on government and health care. But follow the employment corridors east toward Folsom, north toward Roseville and west into Davis, and another picture emerges: a region helping design computer chips, develop biological products and manufacture advanced cell therapies. The map covers four counties, Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado and Yolo, whose companies participate in different parts of the technology economy. Some are global brands with local operations. Others have headquarters here. Universities and research districts provide another essential piece: places where discoveries can develop into businesses.***Sacramento County: Familiar Names, Less Familiar Work*. Folsom’s** technology identity begins with *Intel*, which continues to identify the city as a U.S. campus location. Local engineering roles include semiconductor design and validation, the detailed work of developing chips and checking their performance. Samsung established a Folsom research and development office in 2024, citing the region’s technical talent and proximity to the Bay Area. In addition, Folsom-based *PowerSchool* connects the region to education technology through software used to manage school information and learning. In **Rancho Cordova,** *Solidigm* has its global headquarters and develops enterprise data storage technology, including products supporting artificial intelligence infrastructure. In April 2026, it announced improvements that would bring its headquarters and research center to more than 250,000 square feet. That announcement described a new wing scheduled for the fall; it should not be treated as confirmation of completion. **Elk Grove’s** *Apple* operations extend beyond retail. Recent company job listings have included software engineering, data center planning and corporate roles. Meanwhile, these employers illustrate how much technology work happens behind the scenes. The products may be global, while the people developing and supporting them live in Sacramento-area neighborhoods.***Placer and El Dorado Counties: Chips, Computing and AI.*** Placer County identifies *Oracle* in **Rocklin** and *Hewlett Packard Enterprise* among its technology employers. In **Roseville**, *Bosch* is transforming its first U.S. semiconductor manufacturing site to produce silicon carbide chips, which help manage electrical power in applications such as electric vehicles. In July 2026, the company described an investment of up to $2 billion and reported that sample production had begun. All of these companies bring a presence that adds enterprise software, computing and networking to the regional mix. In **El Dorado Hills**, *Blaize* develops AI hardware and software, while *Broadridge* maintains operations connected to financial technology and customer communications. Growth, however, is uneven. Blaize announced a restructuring in September involving approximately 26 percent of its company-wide workforce. The announcement did not establish the number of affected El Dorado County employees. The opportunity associated with emerging technology comes with exposure to its business cycles.***Biotech Brings Another Kind of Manufacturing.* Sacramento’s** biotechnology story has a particularly concrete example in *Orca Bio*, a Menlo Park–based company with Sacramento manufacturing operations. In June 2026, it reported that its Sacramento operations team had more than tripled over the previous year, supporting manufacturing, supply chain and quality functions. It did not disclose a local employee total in that announcement. Later that month, the FDA approved its cell therapy, marketed as *Tregzi*, for a defined use in adults with certain blood cancers undergoing donor stem cell transplantation. The therapy is intended to improve survival without chronic graft-versus-host disease, a serious transplant complication. Sacramento’s role includes the specialized manufacturing infrastructure behind this work. **Rancho Cordova’s** *ThermoGenesis* supplies another layer of experience. The company identifies an FDA-registered manufacturing facility at its local main office and offers services including quality management, regulatory affairs and engineering support.***Yolo County Widens the Picture.*** Crossing the Sacramento River brings **West Sacramento** and **Davis** into view, broadening the story from medical biotechnology to diagnostics, agriculture and industrial biology. **West Sacramento’s** *GeminiBio* supplies cell culture materials and process liquids used in biotechnology research and production. The company opened an additional manufacturing facility and warehouse in 2023. *Beckman Coulter* also has a registered **West Sacramento** facility, adding a diagnostics company to the local life sciences network. In **Davis**, *BioConsortia* develops microbial products for agriculture. Its work focuses on biological crop inputs, including products intended to support crop performance and nitrogen use. *Novonesis* also lists a **Davis** location, connecting Yolo County to a global biosolutions business built around enzymes, microorganisms and related biological technologies. These businesses expand the meaning of “biotech.” Its applications reach from the hospital laboratory to the farm and industrial production.***Who Is Arriving, and What Is Already Here?*** *Aggie Square* provides a documented example of new organizations joining the region’s innovation network. Opened in May 2025 on UC Davis’ Sacramento campus, the district combines university research with space for companies and other organizations. Its Connect Labs facility offers approximately 50,000 square feet of equipped laboratory and office space for emerging businesses. In February 2026, Wexford announced additional tenants, including Intellivasc and GABRiC USA, alongside organizations working in investment, workforce development and business support. That is evidence of an operating district attracting occupants; it is not a commitment from every company the region hopes to recruit. **UC Davis in** Yolo County and **Aggie Square** in Sacramento are research institutions and infrastructure, rather than biotech companies. Their importance lies in supporting the talent, research and partnerships from which companies can grow.***What Does This Mean for Sacramento-Area Real Estate?*** For homebuyers, sellers and people relocating to Sacramento, the employer map adds useful context. A manufacturing job near the airport creates a different commute from laboratory work in Davis or an engineering position in Folsom. Sustained hiring could support demand for housing, local services and commercial space. But an investment announcement alone cannot establish that nearby home prices will rise. Actual employment, household income, mortgage costs and available housing remain essential.**Buyer Tip:** Confirm the exact worksite and on-site schedule before choosing a neighborhood. Test the commute at the time you would actually travel.**Seller Tip:** Highlight accurate access to established employment centers. Avoid pricing a home around projected hiring that has not occurred.***My Local Intelligence Insight.*** The power of this four-county network is its variety. The region has companies working on computing, medicine, diagnostics, agriculture and biological manufacturing, supported by a major research university. For networking, that means looking beyond the most recognizable logo. Suppliers, laboratory operators, researchers and growing local teams can be important connections. Learn where the players work, understand what they contribute, and think a few moves ahead. Your next introduction could open a door you had not considered. Giving you the chance to checkmate in the game of business and networking.Ready to make your next move in the Sacramento region?
