California Disabled Veterans: Save Big on Property Taxes with Exclusive Exemptions

If you’re a disabled Veteran buying a home in California, there may be a property tax benefit you’re not taking advantage of. California offers a Disabled Veterans’ Property Tax Exemption for qualifying Veterans with a 100% service-connected disability rating, as well as Veterans compensated at the 100% rate due to individual unemployability and certain other qualifying disabilities. For 2026, the exemption can remove up to: • $180,671 of assessed value under the basic exemption • $271,009 under the low-income exemption for qualifying households That can translate into meaningful property tax savings every year. And unlike the regular California Homeowners’ Exemption, which only reduces taxable value by $7,000, this benefit can make a much bigger difference in the ongoing cost of homeownership. As a military wife and REALTOR®, this is exactly why I encourage military families to look beyond just the VA loan when buying a home. Your military benefits can affect not only how you finance the purchase, but what it costs you to own the home afterward. If you qualify, you’ll need to file the appropriate claim with the county assessor where your property is located. Know the benefits you’ve earned and make sure they’re part of your homebuying strategy.
