When It’s Time to Let Go: Selling Your Home to Reclaim Your Life
He spent his retirement savings trying to build the home he’d always dreamed of. Then the money ran out. After more than 20 years of owning the property, he finally had the opportunity to transform it—additional stories, an ADU, the works. But without the right plan and guidance, contractor issues, permits, delays and mounting costs eventually took over. When I met him, the house was only half finished. And he was exhausted. At one point during our conversation, he almost broke down. That’s when it became clear to me: He wasn’t trying to figure out how to get the highest price for his house. He was trying to figure out how to get his life back. He and his wife ultimately decided to sell the property off-market, as-is, and let someone else finish what they started.
