Finding the house is only half of a family move.
The other half is making sure the first school morning actually works.
For families entering Elk Grove Unified, four questions repeatedly appear in district resources and relocation discussions:
When can we enroll? Which calendar or track will our child be on? Can we transfer schools? And will there be a bus?
Those answers can affect your closing date, childcare, work schedule and even whether a particular house still makes sense.
Enrollment starts with residency and the resident school
EGUSD says students in grades 1–12 may enroll for the current school year once residency within the district has been established. The process starts by identifying the resident school for the home's exact address using the district's SchoolSite Locator. EGUSD also offers online enrollment through its student-information system at its comprehensive schools.
Families should get their documents organized before the move.
EGUSD's current enrollment requirements include documentation establishing the student's age and legal name, immunization information, parent or guardian identification, previous school records when applicable and proof of current residence.
For Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten, timing deserves extra attention.
For the 2026–27 school year, EGUSD began TK/K registration on January 20, 2026, with a February 20, 2026 packet deadline for families wishing to participate in the district's electronic randomized placement process. Those dates are already past as of September 10, 2026, so a family moving now should contact its resident school about current-year placement rather than relying on an old registration deadline.
The school calendar may surprise you
EGUSD does not operate on only one school calendar.
For 2026–27, the district publishes a Traditional Calendar, Modified Traditional Calendar and separate year-round Track A, B, C and D calendars.
That means two families living within the same district can have significantly different school-break and start-date patterns depending on their campuses.
Cypress Grove Elementary, which welcomed its first students in July 2026, is one current example of an EGUSD school using a four-track year-round calendar.
Relocation discussions show why parents search this so aggressively. Families moving into the area ask when their track will be confirmed because they need to schedule camps, vacations, work and childcare.
So don't ask only:
“Which elementary school is assigned to this house?”
Also ask:
“Which calendar does that school use, and when will my child's track be confirmed?”
Transfers are an option, not a guarantee
Some buyers assume they can buy the house they want and transfer into a different EGUSD school later.
That is not a reliable home-buying strategy.
EGUSD says transfer requests and Open Enrollment are offered on a space-available basis, and transfers must be renewed annually. An intra-district transfer applies when a student lives in one EGUSD attendance area but wants to attend another EGUSD school.
At the elementary level, EGUSD says the primary reason for an intra-district transfer is childcare and requires the appropriate childcare verification in the process. EGUSD currently offers Open Enrollment for grades 7–12, not elementary schools.
So when a particular school is essential to your decision, evaluate the home based on the verified resident-school situation, not on an assumption that a later transfer will be approved.
Busing is not universal
Transportation is another place where a simple assumption can become an inconvenient surprise.
EGUSD says home-to-school transportation is provided to qualifying students within board-approved busing guidelines rather than universally to every address.
Current district transportation information also says intra-district and inter-district transfer students are not eligible for district transportation.
There is an important exception for some capacity-related placements: EGUSD says a student who is offloaded at district direction between eligible school sites is not charged a transportation fee, although the family must still register the student to ride and obtain a bus pass.
For a buyer, the useful question therefore isn't:
“Does EGUSD have buses?”
It is:
“Does this exact address and assignment qualify for transportation, and what happens if my student is reassigned?”
Build the school move before moving day
Before closing, enter the exact property address in the SchoolSite Locator and check the assigned school's calendar.
If you're moving during the school year, contact the resident school before the closing date and understand which residency documents will be required and when the enrollment can be completed. EGUSD allows current-year enrollment once district residency is established.
Once residency is established:
Confirm enrollment → confirm actual placement → ask about capacity → confirm calendar/track → verify transportation → solve childcare and drop-off logistics.
And if you are considering a transfer, treat that as a separate, space-available application, not something included with the house.
The system becomes much easier when you ask the questions in the right order:
Address. Residency. Placement. Calendar. Transportation. Then optional transfer.
