Moving to Elk Grove for the Schools? What to Verify Before You Buy

Elk Grove Unified School District says a student's home address determines the resident school, but the district also says it cannot guarantee attendance at that particular school. If a campus or grade level reaches capacity, a student can be assigned elsewhere within EGUSD.

That distinction matters when a school is one of the reasons you are choosing a house.

Start With the Exact Address, Not the ZIP Code

Do not use “95757 schools” or a neighborhood name as your final answer.

EGUSD directs families to its SchoolSite Locator, which uses the specific home address to identify the resident school. The district also maintains a Boundary Information line at 916-686-7755 for assignment questions.

That should be a buyer's first school check:

Enter the exact property address before becoming emotionally committed to the house.

Real-estate websites are useful for discovery, but they are not the enrollment authority. Redfin builds home-search pages around individual schools, while GreatSchools connects school ratings with nearby homes. That tells you how tightly school research and home shopping are linked—but EGUSD, not a listing portal, builder or real-estate agent, determines the resident-school assignment.

A Boundary Is Not the Same Thing as a Guaranteed Seat

This may be the single most important school fact an EGUSD buyer should know.

The district says attendance at a particular campus cannot be guaranteed regardless of address. When capacity becomes an issue, elementary students may be offloaded, while secondary students may be redirected to another EGUSD school. Every student residing in the district is still guaranteed enrollment somewhere within EGUSD.

This isn't only a hypothetical policy.

EGUSD's current Boundary Information page specifically identifies Katherine L. Albiani Middle School and Pleasant Grove High School as operating at near or full capacity, with some students in affected feeder areas potentially subject to redirection.

Local parent conversations reveal why that matters to a mover. Families ask when they will know their child's school and track, whether the neighborhood campus has room, and whether an offload will change transportation, childcare or summer planning. Those conversations are anecdotes—not substitutes for calling EGUSD—but they show the real-world questions families face after choosing a house.

Growth Can Change the School Map

EGUSD is a big system. California Department of Education data show 65,483 students in 2025–26, which made it California's fourth-largest public school district by enrollment that year. EGUSD describes a footprint of roughly 320 square miles.

The district's Facilities and Planning Department handles enrollment projections, future school needs, school-site planning and attendance boundaries. EGUSD also says boundaries periodically change when new schools open or population patterns change significantly.

You can see that growth cycle happening now.

Cypress Grove Elementary in Rancho Cordova welcomed its first students on July 15, 2026 and uses a four-track year-round calendar. EGUSD is also continuing work on the future Suncreek Middle/High School project.

The broader planning picture matters too. Elk Grove's General Plan looks toward 2040, while the city's Southeast Policy Area guides future land use, transportation, parks and infrastructure. Sacramento County planning materials for Jackson Township describe a master-planned area of roughly 1,391 acres with up to 6,143 homes as well as proposed schools and other public facilities.

You don't need to become a land-use planner to buy a house.

But you should understand that new housing, school capacity and attendance boundaries interact over time. EGUSD's own planning responsibilities make that connection clear.

Run This School Check Before the Offer

Before writing an offer or signing a new-construction contract, go in this order:

First: enter the exact address in the EGUSD SchoolSite Locator and save the result.

Second: check EGUSD's Boundary Information page for current redirection information.

Third: if a particular school materially affects your buying decision, call EGUSD and ask whether the relevant grade or campus is experiencing a capacity issue.

Fourth: check the school's calendar. EGUSD currently uses traditional, modified-traditional and year-round Track A–D calendars, depending on the school.

Fifth: look at EGUSD Facilities and Planning and the surrounding city's or county's development plans to see what is being built around the neighborhood.

Then judge the home using the complete picture:

House + payment + commute + verified school assignment + capacity + calendar + future growth.
