Leavenworth has two Oktoberfest weekends left, Oct. 9–10 and Oct. 16–17. A few minutes up Icicle Road, the season looks different. The Icicle coho fishery opened Sept. 30. The hatchery's paved creekside trail is still in its open season. Icicle Creek Center for the Arts has something on its calendar most weeks from now to mid-November. All of that is in the lower part of the corridor. Past the Eightmile repair zone, the most recent official word from the Forest Service still lists slides and debris on the road.

That shapes what an October afternoon on the Icicle looks like this year. The parts you can count on start near the river mouth and end around the Snow Lakes trailhead. Past that point, plan to check before you drive.

Where the Coho Water Starts and Stops

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife opened coho retention on the Icicle River on Wednesday, Sept. 30. The season is scheduled through Nov. 30 because the state expects enough coho back in the Icicle to allow a sport harvest. You can keep fish in two stretches, and both are in the lower corridor:

The mouth reach runs from the closure signs 800 feet upstream of the river's mouth to 500 feet downstream of the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery barrier dam.
The Sleeping Lady reach runs from the shoreline markers where Cyo Road meets the river at Sleeping Lady Resort, upstream to the Icicle Peshastin Irrigation footbridge. The footbridge is about 750 feet above the Snow Lakes trailhead parking area.
The Forest Service puts the Snow Lakes trailhead 4.3 miles up Icicle Road from Leavenworth. So the top of the legal coho water is roughly four and a half miles from town, more than three miles below the stretch where the Forest Service has been doing storm repairs this fall.

The rules are tighter than for many fall fisheries:

Two coho a day, with a 12-inch minimum. All other salmon must be released.
No bait, and that includes scents and flavors.
Night closure in effect.
Barbed hooks are allowed. The two-pole endorsement can't be used.
Motorized boats are prohibited on the Icicle under a Chelan County ordinance.
The Nov. 30 end date isn't guaranteed. WDFW says it will watch the fishery closely and
